Cidade da Luz, a non-profit civil society organization, has been committed for 43 years—since the foundation of its first core, the **Centro Espírita Cavaleiros da Luz**—to continuously supporting people in situations of greater social vulnerability.
The coronavirus pandemic, since March 2020, has required adjustments to our social activities, but the work of social assistance, including support to underprivileged institutions, has never stopped. Our broad medical outreach also continued. During this pandemic period, Cidade da Luz intensified its efforts toward people living on the streets—a population that continues to grow every week, revealing the deep needs that exist in our city.
In this context, the project “Banho do Bem” (Shower of Good) was born from witnessing the hardship faced by the homeless during our weekly distribution of food and hygiene kits. As this project expanded, we launched the “Banho do Bem – Solidarity Bus”, which involves acquiring a bus and transforming it into a mobile hygiene unit. This unit will be equipped with individual shower stalls—including accessible ones for people with disabilities—stations for haircuts and beard grooming, shelves, hangers, and bins for towels, clothes, shoes, and hygiene products. Everything will be offered free of charge to those living on the streets.
In addition to traveling through the streets of Salvador, the Solidarity Bus will also remain parked at the Institution’s headquarters, available to anyone in need, always received and assisted by volunteers.
The estimated cost of the project, including the acquisition and conversion of the bus, is R$180,000.00.
The vehicle operation, reception, assistance, and guidance for the users will be carried out by Cidade da Luz volunteers, including team members with experience in working with homeless populations.
We chose the term “busão”, a local slang in Bahia, to create a familiar and empathetic environment for the users of this service.
We firmly believe that, by coming together for good, we can make a positive impact on many lives.
Your support is essential to making this project a reality.
Near or far, you can make a difference.
